Before you can get to where you want, often you’ll need to make time in your calendar to get there. Not only is the time important but finding the energy to also make it happen.

In this article, we’ll take a look at the three areas to help you get started.

  • looking at the present
  • using tools to support
  • help along the way

1. LOOKING AT THE PRESENT

What’s happening in your life now that is sucking the time and energy away from your goals and desires?

For me, a large portion is often related to family activities and work. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending the time here, it’s just that this is often where the majority of time and energy in my schedule resides.

To start making any changes, you’ll need to get a ‘lay of land’. This begins by writing down all of the tasks you are doing in a day. Include the repeating ones and also include if you are the one who is leading (for example: you are driving the kids to school vs. your partner, taking the bus etc.)

Once you have your plan, you can then look at prioritizing the tasks that truly need to be done. This will be in comparison to the ‘nice to do’ activities. In reality, if you want to start making changes, you need to find the energy and time to do so.

2. TOOLS TO SUPPORT

Once you’ve looked at what you ‘have’ to do I suggest using tools to help you in this journey of implementing a more streamlined schedule.

In our house, we use a common list app. Both my husband and I share the lists allowing us to both clearly see grocery lists, tasks and things to do. This shared app helps lighten the load on both of us as we can easily communicate what needs to be done or picked up.

Another tool we utilize is a shared calendar. Again, this is another tool that helps with our communication and allowing either of us to book appointments while on the go. Recently, we have shared this calendar with our kids (age 11 & 12).

3. HELP ALONG THE WAY

I want to let you know that you’re not alone in this journey. This is about learning to prioritize your time and energy and to do so, you’ll most likely need to initiate others to help lighten the load and re-prioritize.

This can often be the hardest part of making the changes. For me, reaching out was never an easy thing to do. I find with my clients and women I chat with, that this is a common occurrence.

As women, we’ve been trained and conditioned in our society to take on the load of everything, even though this is typically a road to burnout and often leaves little time for ourselves.

If you find yourself hesitant to be reaching out and asking for help, start with the smallest item on your schedule and see how that goes. Perhaps it’s the idea of having your partner make a meal each night or your kids helping out with making lunches.
